I began my week with a Mother’s Day impromptu trip, gift from my daughter, to Hawaii, and the start to Memorial Day weekend.

Napa Valley College broke ground on the Wine Spectator Wine Education Center recently. This is the first of two phases to build The Napa Valley College Wine Education Complex, which will more than double classroom and training space with more than 10,000 square feet of modern, efficient learning space.

The College of the Desert Department of Architecture and Environmental Design partnered with the Twin Palms Neighborhood Organization in Palm Springs to create a Little Free Library in the Twin Palms neighborhood. Our talented faculty and students worked tirelessly to help build this stunning design to life. As a token of appreciation, the Twin Palms Neighborhood Organization generously gifted a scholarship to our department. Way to go, Roadrunners!

BC Hosts ‘Pan To Plate’, an Interactive Culinary Experience

Food Services and the Office of Student Life at Bakersfield College recently hosted Pan to Plate, an interactive culinary experience. Students, staff, and community members were all invited to preview a unique food demonstration and sample some of the featured culinary creations.

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian, and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, the dishes featured throughout the event were inspired by AANHPI culture and history. The other dishes that were prepared were Hawaiian Span Musubi, Japanese Sushi, Filipino Pork Ribs, and Vietnamese Veggie Spring Rolls. Each presenter did a short demonstration of the dish, and then audience volunteers were invited to come up front to prepare the dish themselves.

May 25th remembered 63 years later

Did you know that it was 63 years ago today – May 25, 1961 – that President John F. Kennedy gave his famous speech before Congress that the US “should commit itself to achieving the goal, before this decade is out, of landing a man on the Moon and returning him safely to the Earth.”

That goal was realized on July 20, 1969, with Apollo 11 astronauts Neil Armstrong and Buzz Aldrin.

Sierra College welcomed the community May 5 to the annual Dinosaur Day and Science Fest – a festival for all ages, focusing on STEAM (science, technology, engineering, arts and mathematics), education, and so much more. The event featured hands-on activities, demonstrations, dissections, live animals and educational games.

Cypress College Students Coach Junior Chef Academy

From April 22 to 26, 11 Hotel, Restaurant, Culinary Arts students and graduates volunteered as Culinary Coaches for the third annual Junior Chef Academy (former Maple Master Chef Competition) at Commonwealth Elementary School in Fullerton. This event was organized by teacher Melissa Zaucha, and is the third time that Cypress College has helped mentor the budding bakers and cooks.

The honorees, Yvette Garcia, Melissa Jauregui, Amanda Mellett and Anissa Mitchell were recognized at the Board of Governors meeting in Sacramento on May 20.

AP: Community colleges offer clean energy training
as climate-related jobs expand across America

West Los Angeles College student Sarah Solis was featured in a recent AP piece about clean energy job training at community colleges.

“The 1,000-acre Inglewood Oil Field, near West Los Angeles College, where she first enrolled, was what pushed Solis to pursue environmental studies. She later switched to the school’s climate change degree, which was new at the time. Its climate offerings have grown since then; it now hosts the California Center for Climate Change Education.“

BC Hosts Campus Stories: Voices of AANHPI Scholars at Bakersfield College

In honor of Asian American, Native Hawaiian and Pacific Islander (AANHPI) Heritage Month, BC’s Student Government Association recently hosted Campus Stories: Voices of AANHPI Scholars at Bakersfield College.

The event featured a panel of three BC faculty and staff members and two BC students and was moderated by Bryan Hirayama, Professor of Communications at BC, all of whom are of AANHPI heritage. Each panel member shared stories from their individual experiences and answered questions about their families, cultural backgrounds, and educational and career journeys. Their stories of perseverance, overcoming obstacles, and personal achievements were truly inspirational and resonated strongly with those who gathered in the Renegade Events Center for the afternoon.

Making every day count

I started my week at Oracle Park, at the Giants-Dodgers game dedicated to California Community Colleges. CCCCO Vice Chancellor for Communications Paul Feist planned this event as part of the ICan campaign. It was so much fun!

We had Malia Venegas, San Jose City College student athlete throw the first pitch. Venegas is a 4.0 student and a softball team standout player who is transferring to San Jose State University.  In the picture below you see Malia in action right before she executed a delightful overhand pitch to the catcher behind the plate.  Her smile lit up the big screen over the center field, and the crowd loved her.

Five of us joined Malia on the field for the first pitch – President Rowena Tomenang, Debbie Huntze-Rooney (Malia’s coach), Paul Feist, BOG Member Tom Epstein, and me. 

Malia and I got a chance to snap a pic with the Giants’ three World Series trophies as the San Francisco Giants. They won in 2010, 2012, and 2014. (The Giants also won 5 times as the New York Giants.)

Santa Clara Family Health Plan (SCFHP), a community-based health plan in Santa Clara County dedicated to creating opportunities for better health and wellness for all, has committed $100K to Gavilan College to support students pursuing careers in healthcare. The donation is part of their regional $500K investment over the next five years to support the future health care workforce in Santa Clara County.

Community Colleges Are Critical to Climate Action

Jeff Clary, senior director for climate strategies at the Foundation for California Community Colleges, and Cameron Sublett, associate professor and director of The Education Research & Opportunity Center at the University of Tennessee at Knoxville wrote a commentary for Inside HigherEd about the importance of community colleges to climate work.

The federal government (and some states) have advanced aggressive climate targets. The Biden administration’s goals include reducing U.S. greenhouse emissions by 50-52 percent below 2005 levels in 2030, reaching 100 percent carbon pollution-free electricity by 2035, and achieving a net-zero emissions economy by 2050. Guidelines to federal agencies also include a commitment to ensuring that disadvantaged communities benefit from federal investments in climate and clean energy.

These climate goals are ambitious, and without the involvement of the nation’s community and technical colleges, out of reach. Here’s why: community and technical colleges offer scale, speed, and community engagement.

Bakersfield College Hosts 110th Commencement Celebration

Bakersfield College celebrated its 110th Commencement on Friday, May 10th, 2024, with a remarkable milestone of 1,648 graduates. The event was streamed live on YouTube and attracted over 1,000 viewers from around the world. This year’s commencement was particularly significant as it marked the first for newly appointed BC President, Dr. Jerry E. Fliger, and newly appointed Chancellor of KernCCD, Dr. Steven Bloomberg.

Robotic Welding Coming to San Diego College of Continuing Education

Student welders at San Diego College of Continuing Education (SDCCE) will soon be adding new skills to their repertoire — coding and robotics — for free. The 100,000 square foot welding facility located at the Educational Cultural Complex (4343 Ocean View Blvd.) will be equipped with a plasma cutter robot, a welder robot, electrical upgrades to equipment installed in the 1970s, as well as new smart TVs and cameras for HyFlex teaching.

Irvine Valley College Selected For Youth Service Stimulus Grant
Funded By The Allstate Foundation

Irvine Valley College has received a $25,000 grant from The Allstate Foundation in collaboration with the Center for Expanding Leadership & Opportunity (CELO) to  support youth-led, youth-driven community service among students. This grant is part of The Allstate Foundation’s national efforts to transform how we engage, equip, and  prepare youth to participate in community service.

How California is building career pathways to
its next big economic sector: the ocean

CalMatters published this piece by AltaSea President & CEO Terry Tamminen and me, talking about the importance of education for the future of the blue economy in California.

Just like what the dot-com boom and rise of the internet did for California, something similar is on the cusp of happening with the blue economy. So, it’s only smart that we make sure our next generation has the training and skills necessary to ensure that they can seize these opportunities.

All of this starts with education.

Recently, California’s community colleges launched the Blue Economy Climate Action Pathways program, or BECAP, to align academia with businesses to help our students get sustainable, good-paying jobs in ocean-related fields. This first-of-its-kind partnership will help developing new curriculum and programs to fill the next generation of ocean-centric jobs.

Bakersfield College’s Wylie and May Louise Jones Art Gallery is currently hosting a special exhibition in collaboration with the Rising Scholars Program: 2024 Voices Through Art, a Rising Scholars Art Exhibition. Twenty-five individual artworks, each crafted with diverse mediums, will be displayed along the gallery walls, highlighting a unique expression of artistic talent from the Rising Scholars students.

Chico State, Northern Community Colleges Streamline Transfer Process

Chico State President Steve Perez and leadership from Butte College, College of the Siskiyous, Feather River College, Lassen Community College, Shasta College, Woodland Community College and Yuba College signed Memoranda of Understanding to formalize dual admission and streamlined transfer for students interested in pursuing their bachelor’s degree at Chico State. This guaranteed admission and accompanying support mechanisms lay the groundwork to simplify and ease transfer students’ pathways to pursue four-year degrees, credentials, and further education within their region.

Celebrating College of San Mateo’s HSI Status and Black Excellence

On April 22, 2024, as part of California Community College’s Black Student Success Week, CSM’s Title V Grant team hosted an event to celebrate their designation as a Hispanic Serving Institution (HSI) while spotlighting Black excellence in higher education.

San Joaquin Delta College Invites Public to View “Eyes of Science”

San Joaquin Delta College is the only community college in the U.S. to offer training in electron microscopy. With magnification of 100,000 times or greater, these powerful microscopes are known as the “eyes of science” because they are used for critical research in many scientific fields. Graduates of Delta’s electron microscopy program have landed high-paying, in-demand jobs at laboratories across the country. SJDC recently held an open house showcasing their electron microscopy program.

Jamaal Brown hosted an exhilarating trivia-style Black History quiz competition at Moorpark College. The Black 365 Knowledge Bowl, a fast-paced, buzzer-beating event challenged participants to answer a series of questions related to African American history. The spirited contest crowned the Black 365 Knowledge Bowl Champ and was an inspirational celebration of Black history and achievements. The hour-long event was designed to entertain and inform attendees with rich historical content and stories of prominent Black individuals.

Thanks To Jim Burke Ford

Bakersfield College’s Automotive Technology Program has received a generous donation of a 2023 Lincoln Aviator from local dealership, Jim Burke Ford Lincoln.
