Congrats to BC Alum Kevin McCarthy!

Sonya Christan and Congressman Kevin McCarthy

Sonya Christian and Kevin McCarthy post Renegade Football Championship game

On behalf of the students and employees of Bakersfield College, I send warm congratulations to Bakersfield Congressman Kevin McCarthy on his election as House majority leader. Today, July 31, 2014, he takes Renegade pride with him to the top of the house majority party.

Renegade blood flows in Congressman McCarthy’s veins. After the football state championship win two years ago, Congressman McCarthy took time from his busy schedule to congratulate our players.

Just this last October, at our Centennial Gala event, Bakersfield College honored Congressman McCarthy for his service to the community with a 100 Stars award.

Kevin is a proud Bakersfield College alumna, and we at Bakersfield College celebrate his achievement!

BC Alum Receives Haas Public Service Award

Huge congratulations go out to Dr. David E. Smith, Bakersfield College alumnus and founder of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic, on his honor as the 2013 Peter E. Haas Public Service Award from University of California, Berkeley. Dr. Smith graduated from Bakersfield College in 1958, before heading on to UC Berkeley and UC San Francisco Medical School.

In 2012, Dr. Smith came home to Bakersfield and presented at our Levan Center for the Humanities on his development of the Haight Ashbury Free Clinic in San Francisco. His reflection on the socio-cultural revolution taking place in the early 1960s is available for download.

Bakersfield College, and North High School, proudly claim Dr. Smith as an alumni. In this year of celebration for Bakersfield College’s centennial, I am glad our college’s former students are recognized for their outstanding contributions for society. With leaders like these blazing the trail for the class of 2014, the possibilities are endless!

Students in the Community

Part of the fun of being Bakersfield College’s president is being recognized by people in the community – particularly former students. Moving back to Bakersfield meant buying a home and the inevitable home repairs and improvements which come with owning a house. So, on a Saturday afternoon, I went into Home Depot with a few items to pick up, and came back with so much more!

Meet Sonia Garcia, Bakersfield College alumna and now customer service specialist at Home Depot. Sonia, and the thousands of students like her, are the reason why Bakersfield College is so important to the community.

Have you met students out and about? What do they say about Bakersfield College?
