Closing out June 2025

I started my week in San Diego.

And you know what I am going to say….. what I always say…. What’s not to like about San Diego.

This photo looks surreal.  There was a band playing at the amphitheater and people enjoying their Sunday evening.

Another –

On Monday, I spoke at the Veterans Symposium in San Diego, where I called on our
colleges to fully embrace Credit for Prior Learning as a way to recognize and honor the
military experience of our student veterans.

The energy in the room was inspiring—a powerful reflection of the shared commitment to those who have served.

I’m especially proud of the dedicated staff who lead this work across our system, with heartfelt appreciation for Heather McClenahen and her steadfast leadership of our Veterans Program.

Umoja Celebrates 10th Anniversary

This year, Bakersfield College proudly marked the 10th anniversary of the Umoja Community ASTEP (African American Success Through Excellence and Persistence) program with a vibrant gala that brought together students, alumni, faculty, staff, and community members in celebration of a decade of achievement, growth, and unity.

Rooted in the Kiswahili word for “unity,” Umoja is more than a student support program — it is a powerful movement grounded in African American culture, identity, and educational equity. Over the past decade, Umoja at BC has helped foster student success by integrating culturally responsive curriculum, dedicated mentoring, and a strong sense of belonging.

Here’s a video message I sent for the event:

Community Voices: Kindness is not political

From Nick Strobel –
“Kindness is not political” is on a magnet being produced by a fellow member of my church to distribute everywhere. This is not some sappy, sweet sentiment message but, rather, a reminder that regardless of your political views, we’re called to treat all people with a sense of human dignity and respect. This used to be a commonly-held expectation but in today’s social climate, it can seem like a radical counter-culture statement at times.

Last night, we were treated a rare Planetary Parade as Mercury, Venus, Mars, Jupiter, Saturn, Uranus and Neptune – and the moon – were aligned in the night sky just after dusk. While it’s relatively common for groups of 3-5 planets to appear, all of these seven being involved is rare. The next time we’ll be treated to such an alignment won’t be until 2040!

In India, the Mahakumbha Mela was celebrated …. a religious gathering recognizing the planetary movements that symbolize cosmic order, purification, and spiritual transcendence. It reflects the integration of astronomy, mythology, and spirituality in Indian traditions.

California Higher Ed – Championing our students

You may have been tracking the 4 Nations Face Off this week ….but it was 45 years ago today that the Miracle on Ice happened.

On February 22, 1980, during the medal round of the men’s ice hockey tournament at the 1980 Winter Olympics in Lake Placid, the US team defeated the Soviet Union 4-3. The Soviet Union had been dominating Olympics hockey – winning 5 of the previous 6 gold medals.

As for me …..

This past week was a hectic travel week. Starting in Sacramento with the Assembly Budget hearing, then Chabot College to present at the National EV Consortium Conference, then to El Centro to visit Imperial Valley College and check out their Lithium program, then to San Diego to present at the Academic Senate AI Academy, and wrapped up with a Digital Center meeting in Orange County. All of this travel, while taking zoom meetings in the airport, driving in the car, in a hotel lobby etc etc etc. In the meantime, the emails pile up and so do the texts. If I don’t respond to a text and it gets buried, go ahead and bump it up.

But honestly, it is all good. Such a privilege to put in time and energy supporting our California Community College students, faculty and staff.

California Community Colleges – we take care of our students, our communities, and our planet.

Here are a few photos from my week.

I love this photo that Linda Vasquez snapped – the three higher education system heads when we were testifying at the Assembly budget subcommittee. This is Michael Drake’s last presentation to this Assembly subcommittee since he is retiring at the end of the year.
