The strength of presence of each other

It was on this day in 1979 that Mother Teresa was awarded the Nobel Peace Prize “for work undertaken in the struggle to overcome poverty and distress, which also constitutes a threat to peace.”

She declined the traditional banquet and requested the budget for the celebration be used to help the poor in India.

At the time of her death, her Missionaries of Charity had over 4,000 sisters and hundreds of thousands of volunteers at hundreds of centers worldwide, including homes of orphaned children, homes for people with HIV/AIDS, and hospices for the terminally ill.

I love this quote from her Nobel Lecture:

“I think that we in our family don’t need bombs and guns, to destroy to bring peace – just get together, love one another, bring that peace, that joy, that strength of presence of each other in the home. And we will be able to overcome all the evil that is in the world.”

As for me …..

I was in Southern California all week. Started at UCLA and ended in Riverside for Chancellor Wolde-ab Isaac’s retirement.

What a joy to be here celebrating a truly remarkable leader, Chancellor Wolde-ab Isaac.

Good morning California.

Bringing college credit deeper into high school CTE

A new report suggests expanding dual-enrollment career and technical education programs in secondary schools.

More than 1 million high school graduates each year complete substantial CTE coursework without taking a single dual-enrollment course. That’s a missed opportunity for community colleges to connect career preparation more directly to college.

A new report from the Community College Research Center at Teachers College, Columbia University, argues that colleges and K-12 systems can close that gap by embedding college courses into CTE pathways, career academies and other programs that already serve high school students.

California Community Colleges supporting working Californians

This week it was off to Orange County for the Vision 2030 Adult Learner Noncredit Summit.

Here is the team from the Chancellor’s Office that attended the summit.

Crystal, Myra, Tony, Sonya, Linda

Byron Breland and I did a fireside chat with State Treasurer Fiona Ma –

The conference participants naturally responded to Fiona Ma and she received a standing ovation. Fiona is smart and funny… and says it as it is.

I loved meeting the students who were doing an AI internship with Merge Opportunity

Structured work experience as part of students’ education, particularly internships, apprenticeships, and campus-based employment, play a decisive role in shaping students’ academic trajectories and long-term economic mobility. While programs differ in design and intensity, when students participate in meaningful, supervised, career-aligned work, they are more engaged academically, more confident in their career direction, and more likely to complete their educational programs. This is a priority we are advancing in Vision 2030.

And here is one of the students asking Fiona a question about internships.

I did a panel with three leading presidents in the adult leaner noncredit space – Valentina Purtell, Tina King, Annebelle Nery

Thank you Annebelle Nery and Santa Ana College for hosting the event. And Rancho Santiago District.

North Orange Continuing Education put together a care package and included this – plantain chips. I grew up on these in Kerala.

NOCE also brought one of their facility dog, Fanta, to serve as an official conference greeter. They partner with Canine Companions to bring trained therapy dogs into their facilities.

Here’s Fanta’s card:

Back when the Board of Governors visited NOCE in September 2025, I got to meet their very first facility dog, Lindon.

I hung out briefly with Julie Schoepf and Annie Cotton, and discovered that Annie has her own podcast. Check it out! Gorgeous & Graceful Life

Beautiful moon…I snapped this photo from the Ferry from Coronado to the Convention Center.

And I took this 11 second video of the moon for you:

I snapped this picture on the elevator door at a hotel I stay at in San Diego. It’s an ad letting families know that kids under 10 eat free ….but it’s the expression on this kid’s face that gets me every time.

Every time I stay here, I see that face and laugh out loud…..Pure joy. Pure mischief. And maybe just a little excitement about eating for free.

Don’t you agree?

And another pic …

We had a Board of Governors visit San Diego Mesa College. The college shared these pics:

And here’s a video I took of dancers from San Diego Mesa College:

A week in northern California – Marin & San Francisco

This week was another filled with travel.

Tuesday’s Board of Governors meeting was held at College of Marin, in beautiful Marin County, just north of San Francisco, with campuses in Kentfield and Novato. Founded in 1926, the college is celebrating its centennial this year. It serves about 9,000 students and offers everything from transfer and career programs to ESL and lifelong learning.

College of Marin also takes full advantage of its extraordinary natural surroundings. Its Natural History program turns Marin itself into a classroom, with students studying local ecosystems, plants, insects, birds and marine life through hands-on fieldwork. The college even has a monarch butterfly habitat and a field station in Bolinas …wonderful examples of learning grounded in place.

Linda Vasquez snapped a selfie with Siria, Yanna, Board Member Adrienne Brown and me when we were at the Monarch butterfly habitat.

College of Marin has designed space around belonging. Its learning communities and affinity spaces come together around a large, open common area filled with natural light, with offices and gathering spaces opening directly into it. Students can study, connect with friends, find their community or simply hang out, and support is right there. It is a physical space designed around the idea that belonging and learning go together.

Here is a photo with a student leader Isa… check out the view from the learning space.

On Wednesday, I headed to San Francisco.

From Oxnard College:

On Constitution Day, we reflect on the impact this document has had on our democracy over the past 250 years.

Like our nation, the Constitution’s power lies in its enduring promise of a more perfect union. Through the Constitution and its amendments, and through generations of civic engagement, Americans have worked to narrow the gap between the document’s ideals and the realities faced by those too often excluded from its promise.

We honor those who have served and sacrificed to defend our Constitution, as well as those who have worked to help our nation live up to its highest ideals and extend its liberties to all.

That work is part of the American story, and each of us has a role to play in carrying it forward. We can participate in our democracy by being informed, exercising our rights, engaging in our communities, and working together toward that more perfect union.

Thanks to our Associated Student Government for helping bring Constitution Day to life here on campus today by sharing copies of the Constitution and encouraging students to learn more about this important document and our democracy.
