Jasmine in full bloom April 2025

Nothing beats jasmine in full bloom. The fragrance…

I had the trellis for the jasmine installed during the COVID lockdown.

And the second trellis –

I wanted to share a few events I was at recently.

The Orange County AI and Gen Z Summit was a great event. Here’s a short excerpt from my remarks:

What was the first piece of technology that changed your world?

For Boomers, it might have been the moon landing broadcast on a black-and-
white TV.

For Gen X, maybe it was the Walkman. I witnessed the dawn of the internet.

For Millennials, it was probably Napster.

And for Gen Z? It may be when ChatGPT answered a question better than a
textbook.

These stories help us anchor rapid change in shared human experience. And right
now, artificial intelligence is shaping a new chapter in how we live, learn, work, and
relate.

I also participated in a fireside chat with Cheryl Aschenbach at the ASCCC Plenary.

It was a great conversation and I was astonished at the quantify of work we have
advanced in the last two years with the Academic Senate.

After my travels it is always good to be home.

Neo, the 100-pound gentle giant has a surprising hobby—gardening. Not the dig-up-the-yard kind, but the delicate, blade-by-blade grass selection from overgrown flower beds. You’d think a mouth that big would bulldoze everything in its path, but Neo approaches his grassy buffet as a delicacy—sniff, inspect, nibble…. avoiding every geranium petal.

Hope in not an illusion. Hope does not disappoint.

Pope Francis passed away on April 21st (Easter Monday). He was born Jorge Mario Bergoglio in 1936 in Buenos Aires.

Pope Francis led with humility, focusing on big reforms, and embracing modern ways to connect with people. His social media posts felt more like personal messages from a caring pastor rather than an official declaration. He shared prayers, encouragement, and called for a caring society.

Pope Francis was not afraid to take bold stands. He made it clear that issues like climate change aren’t just political debates — they’re moral responsibilities. He called on everyone to care for the planet. He has been a strong voice for migrants and refugees and has shown more openness toward LGBTQ than past popes, stressing that the Church welcomes everyone.

At a time when so many institutions feel out of touch, Pope Francis stood out by showing that leadership grounded in humility, action, and real human connection still matters.

His last message was read out on April 20th, Easter Sunday.

Here are two excerpts:

The resurrection of Jesus is indeed the basis of our hope. For in the light of this event, hope is no longer an illusion. Thanks to Christ — crucified and risen from the dead — hope does not disappoint! Spes non confundit! (cf. Rom 5:5). That hope is not an evasion, but a challenge; it does not delude, but empowers us.

On this day, I would like all of us to hope anew and to revive our trust in others, including those who are different than ourselves, or who come from distant lands, bringing unfamiliar customs, ways of life and ideas! For all of us are children of God!

Shafter Library Adds Braille Books to Promote Inclusivity and Learning

The Shafter Library, a public library and satellite campus of Bakersfield College, recently acquired a collection of braille books, thanks to a Friends of the Shafter Library contribution. These books provide readers with the story written in English with clear braille lettering taped on each page. This makes the books inclusive to children who are blind or visually impaired, as well as to older family members reading to young children. It also provides a learning opportunity to those who are not visually impaired to learn more about braille.

Ariel Dyer, a BC Reference Librarian and Shafter Library Liaison, was excited about the new books. “The addition of this braille collection expands our reach to blind and visually impaired people and their families,” she said, “Additionally, it enriches the informal learning of sighted people and families through exposure to braille.”

to improve progress, report says

California’s foster care students have improved their high school graduation rates since 2013, but have barely improved, or even lost ground, in rates of suspension, attendance and prompt college enrollment, according to a new report.

And, in the 10 districts with the most foster students, only a fraction of 1% of the targeted money was directly spent on that group. The report, by WestEd, a nonpartisan education research agency, attributed the discrepancy to a disconnect between the administrators who drew up the spending plans and the staff who work directly with students, the report found.

Hello April 2025

On April 1, 1976, Steve Jobs and Steve Wozniak launched the Apple Computer. It was almost exactly one year after Bill Gates and Paul Allen founded Microsoft – on April 4, 1975. Why do I mention it? I am reading the Bill Gates memoir Source Code – first in a trilogy.

50 years of computer innovation – it’s amazing how far we have come and how these two companies are still at the forefront. And of course now we have AI …. that is all I hear everywhere I turn.

Diving into the world of technology is getting me excited for this fall’s Futures Summit – Educational Innovation in a Digital Era. It will be held September 9-11 at the Santa Clara Convention Center.
