Friday evening was all about the World Cup….A perfect way to ease into the weekend.

The US won its first match vs Paraguay, 4-1.

Check out this video highlighting the US’ first goal:

Earlier this week, I went to Los Angeles Southwest College’s graduation. It was great to see Dr. Anthony Culpepper:

Then it was off to Seattle. The California Community Colleges visited AWS:

And another one –

I loved the chance to see The Spheres and the Amazon campus. The spheres are a conservatory that’s home to more than 40,000 plant species from the cloud forest regions of over 30 countries.

And from the outside:

Goodbye Seattle … listening to a musician on the airport…. Moments that take your breath away.

Good morning California.
It is June 13, 2026.

In this California community, older adults are going back to school

Merced College instructor Ofelia Cruz is 73 years old. But whenever her students in her “Injury and Fall Prevention” class figure out her age, they’re shocked.

“When they find out that I’m older than them, they’re going, ‘What?’ And I said ‘The secret is movement and consistency. You have to do it all the time,’” she said.

That’s why Cruz is teaching the class at an assisted living home called Park Merced. Two days a week, Cruz lays out a speaker with 80’s dance music, some chairs, and a variety of small black and purple weights.

Housing Has Become An Imperative for Student Success,
Argues Lake Tahoe Community College President Jeff DeFranco

Student housing, according to Lake Tahoe Community College President Jeff DeFranco, has often been treated as an auxiliary service in higher education, one that’s important but separate from the academic mission itself. This assumption, he believes, is no longer indicative of the reality students face today.

Across the United States, a surge in housing costs is increasingly determining whether students can enroll in college or remain until graduation. Within communities shaped by short-term rentals and limited housing inventory, DeFranco suggests that the issue has intensified rapidly.

Child Development Center Provides Valuable Learning Experiences
for Children of BC Students

The Child Development Center (CDC) is a unique and valuable resource for Bakersfield College students and the community. Located on the north side of the Panorama campus, the CDC helps BC student parents achieve their academic goals by providing childcare services while they attend classes, study for exams, work on final projects, etc. However, the services they offer go beyond providing just a safe space for kids to play, the CDC staff incorporate intentional educational opportunities into their daily activities – so children are learning while having fun.

Sandra Harrington, or Miss Sandy as she is known to the kids, is one of the teachers at the CDC. She was excited to talk about what the teachers do each day to help the children learn and grow. “We try to help the children integrate and learn in a hands-on way,” she said, “the teachers use their creativity to help the kids ‘learn as they play’ – that is our philosophy.” The teachers get ideas from the students for themes that they rotate every several weeks. The current theme is outer space, and the teachers collaborate together to incorporate the theme into the lesson plans. “We brainstorm with the kids and ask them, ‘What do you want to learn about?’ and that’s where we get the ideas for our themes,” says Miss Sandy, “we believe in collaboration, communication and teamwork.”

The Highs and Lows of February: Love, Loss, and Everything In Between

Two weeks’ worth of content in this blog….

Last Saturday, February 14th, rather than doing my usual “week in review” blog post, I wrote a Valentine’s Day letter to the California Community Colleges.

Here is the link if you would like to take 3 minutes to read it again. https://sonyachristianblog.com/2026/02/14/a-love-letter-to-the-california-community-colleges-on-valentines-day-2026/#comments

Week of February 9th – 13th

Throw Back to Super Bowl Sunday. I was blown away by all the amazing performances.

Brandi Carlisle performing “America the Beautiful.” Check out the video!

Charlie Puth performed the National Anthem. You can see the video here.

And Bad Bunny’s halftime performance was so joyful! I especially loved when he had special guest Lady Gaga for a song.

You can find a video of that part here.

Right after the Super Bowl, I headed out to Washington, D.C., for our annual advocacy event.

It was cold…

A few photos –

Descending to Reagan National Airport:

Can you see the ice in the water?

Another picture for you:

The view from my room:

This is what I fell asleep to:

Here is a photo with the SSCCC delegation.

Lots of photos…. I know. Was absolutely feeling every moment in DC. Last glimpse of the Washington monument as we speeded away to the airport.

Goodbye for now, DC. Until we meet again!

Got this picture of a cherry blossom from a friend – celebrating the birth of Spring 2026 back here in California.

Then there was the Community College Baccalaureate Conference, which was held in Long Beach.

Here is Pam Haynes with the team from the Chancellor’s Office.

The week of February 14th – 21st

February has highs and lows for me.
Highs – My daughter’s birthday, my best friend from high school’s birthday and Valentine’s Day… and I love Valentine’s Day!
Lows – My mom passed away and Bessie, our chocolate lab, passed away.

Pam Christian
Bessie

On Monday, February 15th, I headed back to Sacramento for meetings and the annual Assembly Higher Educational Budget Subcommittee hearing.
Then headed to San Jose to host a CEO tech tour along with the Digital Center.

We had the opportunity to visit the campuses of Google, Zoom, and Adobe. At each stop, the conversations were substantive.  From AI integration and workforce preparation to collaboration tools and the future of digital creativity. What stood out to me was not just the sophistication of the technology, but the speed at which these companies iterate and evolve. That pace challenges us to continue to revise our thinking about agility, partnerships, and how we prepare students for the world they are stepping into.

Good morning California.
It is February 21, 2026.

5 creative ways California colleges are feeding students beyond food pantries

To improve CalFresh outreach and enrollment, California started setting aside annual funds in 2021 for public colleges and universities to establish and operate basic needs centers with food pantries, where students obtain free food staples. The California State University and University of California systems each receive $15 million and California Community Colleges receives $30 million annually. As of 2023, every public higher education campus in the state has a basic needs center and food pantry.

However, for many campuses, these solutions still aren’t enough. To fill the gaps, some have created their own innovative solutions. From free meals to food lockers, staff and students at five campuses – including CCCs Compton College, Contra Costa College, Antelope Valley College, and Cerro Coso Community College – around California offer creative alternatives.

History Instructor Stacey Marie Svilich of Feather River College, Math Professor Leila Safaralian of MiraCosta College, and Business Professor Denise Bushnell of Sierra College were honored at the March 25 Board of Governors meeting in Sacramento.

The Hayward Award for Excellence in Education program, established in 1989 and named in honor of former California Community College Chancellor Gerald C. Hayward, are presented annually to celebrate outstanding community college faculty members for their commitment to their students, college and profession.

It is so nice to be able to celebrate our amazing faculty.

After the BOG meeting, I headed to UCLA to present at the Blue Economy Intersegmental conference.
Our community colleges are doing great work in this space. 15 community colleges are collaborating with AltaSea to develop the Blue Economy Climate Action Pathways (BECAP) certification program, with new curriculum and programs to fill the next generation of jobs focused on the ocean. The curriculum includes Regenerative Aquaculture, Ocean Renewable Energy & Clean Air, Blue Tech & Underwater Robotics, and Ecosystems Conservation and Restoration.

Hello December 2024

The Blue Marble. On this day in 1972, one of the most widely-reproduced photographs in history was taken aboard Apollo 17.

This was the last crewed lunar mission. No human since has ventured far enough away to be able to photograph a whole-Earth image. There have been photographs taken by uncrewed spacecraft missions.

The photo has long stood as a symbol of Earth’s vulnerability and the need for environmental protection.

In January 2012, NASA unveiled “Blue Marble 2012,” a composite image created from a series of photos taken on January 4, 2012.
