Bakersfield College has support of the city

Mayor Harvey Hall has been an ardent supporter of Bakersfield College and the positive impact that BC has on the lives of many in our community.  In response to a lot of media attention recently, Mayor Hall wrote a letter to the editor (see below) in support of BC.

Here is the letter to the editor on June 26, 2013

News cycles aren’t very long, and bad press usually fades over time. But what doesn’t fade is a 100-year legacy of Bakersfield College being the capstone of the greater Bakersfield community’s higher educational and athletic foundation (“SCFA denies BC’s appeal of sanctions,” June 26).

And for more than 50 years, Bakersfield College has played a huge role in my upbringing and professional life. As an alumni and former elected trustee of the Kern Community College District Board, I write today to accentuate the positive influence Bakersfield College has had on assisting thousands upon thousands of students, both young and old, in realizing their career and technical education goals through BC’s superb academic programs that now include the Levan Institute for Lifelong Learning.

The positive effects of the college’s athletic program spill over into our community as the appeal of football in the United States is undeniable. The athletic program offerings enhance the campus life of our students, give alumni a means to stay connected and raise BC’s profile, which often attracts research grants.

The academic successes of BC continues today, as it celebrated its 99th annual commencement ceremony this past May with 836 students earning Associates of Arts or Sciences degrees.
