It was 71 years ago on May 17th, that the Supreme Court issued a landmark ruling in Brown v. Board of Education of Topeka, with justices ruling unanimously that racial segregation in public schools was unconstitutional.

Thurgood Marshall served as chief attorney for the plaintiffs – 13 years later, he was appointed as the first Black Supreme Court Justice.

Fullerton College AI Drone Team Earns Top American Finish
at International A2RL Competition in Abu Dhabi 

Fullerton College’s AI Drone Racing Team, led by student Eric Park, earned an impressive 9th place finish at the Autonomous Aerial Racing League (A2RL) global competition held in Abu Dhabi, placing higher than any other American team and ahead of multiple university and professional teams from around the world.

San Bernardino Valley College students, faculty, and staff gathered on April 24 to celebrate the reopening of the SBVC Botanical Gardens, described by Interim Dean of Science Lorrie Burnham as a “living laboratory.” New features include more walking paths for visitors; extended interpretive signage; a propagation site for growing native plants; and a bee hotel.

Cosumnes River College Honors National Day of Indigenous Awareness

The Native American Higher Education Resources office acknowledged the national day to honor the lives of missing and murdered Indigenous people on May 5. The event displayed a tub of 4,200 hearts to represent families and communities who mourn the pain of their loved ones, and ones who have been unheard or unfound.

Diablo Valley College Honored with East Bay Innovation Award
for Robotics Program

Diablo Valley College (DVC) has received the “Community Impact” award at the 12th annual East Bay Innovation Awards, presented by the East Bay Economic Development Alliance (East Bay EDA). DVC was celebrated for its Industrial Automation and Robotics Program, which equips students with the hands-on skills needed for careers in advanced manufacturing, logistics, and medical research—sectors increasingly dependent on robotics.

I was born and raised under the California sun, but have found myself living out-of-state, most recently in Seattle. I have never been able to get used to Seattle’s endless grey skies with no sun, the solitary culture associated with early sunsets and a quiet apathy in the air. As many consider moving from California due to the high cost of living, I just find myself longing for home. I miss the sunsets over the beach. I miss In-N-Out and the late-night Mexican food. I miss the long drives along the coast with no destination. I miss saying “gnarly” without awkward stares. I miss Disneyland and the Golden Gate.

BC Students Excel at Statewide Percussion Competition

Over the first weekend in May, BC music majors Justin Barker and Matthew Brock traveled to Fresno State University to compete in the Percussive Arts Society’s California state-wide solo competition. Both students represented the college well, with Matthew earning the second-place prize in the collegiate classical snare drum division.
