Good morning Bakersfield.  It is September 2, 2017, my brother Kevin’s birthday and a great day to be a Renegade.  And why not, we launch our Renegade Football season today with an 8:00 p.m. kickoff time.  Take a nap this afternoon and then bring your family and friends and head on out to Memorial Stadium at sundown, and spend the next three hours of your Saturday evening with your favorite people and your favorite team.  I hope to see you there.

Tonight’s Renegade Football Game Delayed to 8:00 p.m.

In light of this week’s record-breaking temperatures and the National Weather Service’s four-day “Extreme Heat Watch” warning beginning this Friday and running through the weekend, we conferred with team physicians, athletic trainers, and our coaching and administrative staff and decided to delay the start of Saturday’s home opener in Memorial Stadium to 8pm.

The evening start time will allow the bulk of game day activities to occur after projected peak temperatures have passed, thus reducing the risk of heat-related illness to our student athletes. In addition to altering the schedule, we have rented eight specialized misting fans in an effort to reduce the sideline temperature. We’ve also organized cooling areas on the each concourse on both sides of Memorial Stadium. This decision was made for the safety of all student athletes, and we regret any inconvenience this may cause in the short term, but we are confident that it is the best decision for the long term health of all involved.

Again, I invite you, your family, and friends to join me at Memorial Stadium this evening. Memorial Stadium is an incredible place. The double-decked concrete and steel stadium has been home to many great accomplishments and celebrations such as the first ever junior college bowl and the Kern County Shrine Club Potato Bowl. And here, on the corner of University and Mount Vernon, Jim Ryun, at age 20 broke the world record for running a mile in 1967. For generations, incredible athletic talent like that has come to this stadium to hone their skills, compete, and perform. But one of my favorite things about Memorial Stadium is that games played here are a showcase of work ethic.

Football has always been about more than wins and losses. The game teaches lessons that last a lifetime; lessons such as commitment, belief, doing what it takes in the moment, and brotherhood on and off the field. Football programs and college athletics around the country have consistently developed citizens of high character by instilling the true values of the game into the core of the student athlete. And Bakersfield College is no different. The determination and perseverance that our athletes will experience this season will stay with them their whole lives.

This season, I’m proud of our student athletes both on and off the field. And I’m proud to invite you to Memorial Stadium for a great game and great season of football! See you this evening for the kick off at 8PM.

Not everyone can say they are a Renegade; it’s a special title that is earned by doing things our way; The Renegade Way. Coach Painton showed a part of that code today when he led BC Baseball over to the adjacent soccer complex to root on Men’s Soccer for their home opener. Coach P isn’t one to shorten practice or pass on an opportunity to work at getting better for darn near anything; and that made his decision to bring his men over all the more special. It wasn’t lost on Coach Vayron.

M&O Tour

Over the years, the M&O (Maintenance and Operations) team has served the BC campus by improving and maintaining our facilities and I’m proud to share that they’re now getting a brand new and improved facility. The new M&O facility houses our campus tradesmen, custodial staff, and grounds keepers. This new location is also home to our mail room, shipping and receiving, and print shop.

IMAG0702

The two-story structure is equipped with many features to accommodate a multitude of skilled employees on our campus. I was lucky enough to be one of the first to tour the building on Thursday morning. A grand opening and ribbon cutting is in the works and I’m excited to share those details with you as soon as the info is available. For now, here is a sneak peak and some photos from my tour with Bill Potter and our incredible M&O team!  I loved seeing Bill Potter’s excitement….he was like a kid in a candy store.

Andy Wilcut in our M&O department cared for these rose bushes for over a year while the water was cut off during the construction of this new facility. Andy mentioned the he wasn’t sure exactly who Hank Pfister was, but “he must have been well liked to have such a memorial dedication” so he wanted to make sure the area was well cared for. This is why I’m the luckiest and happiest college president ever.

Side note, Hank Pfister, was one of our 100 stars for our centennial year celebration. Here are the details all about Hank:

Hank Pfister, Jr.

100-stars-hankpfisterHank Pfister (born October 9, 1953 in Bakersfield, California) is a former tennis player from the United States, who won two singles titles (1981, Maui and 1982, Newport) during his professional career. The right-hander reached his highest individual ranking on the ATP Tour on May 2, 1983, when he became World No. 19.

How he got started: Born into a family of tennis players, Pfister picked up his racket early and never looked back. “I really had no aspirations to be a professional tennis player,” Pfister said, laughing. “When you find you’re good at something, you tend to enjoy it—it was just something I had fun doing.” After undefeated seasons at BHS and BC, Pfister was given a scholarship to San Jose State and didn’t lose a match his entire first year. “I honestly still thought I was going to be a P.E. teacher.” That didn’t stop him from training with (and beating) John McEnroe during McEnroe’s early years.

Career highlights: Hank competed with tennis greats Jimmy Connors, Andre Agassi, and Arthur Ashe (and beating them), being a US Open Doubles finalist, reaching the semi-finals at Wimbledon and the Australian Open three times, and was a two-time French Open Doubles Champion.

His heroes: Tennis pro Brian Gottfried, a friend, who happens to have been ranked #3 in the world in ‘77, makes the cut. But, for Pfister, tennis legend Stan Smith takes the cake. “I grew up watching Smith when I was in high school and college, when Smith was winning Wimbledon. To find myself playing him in front of 10,000 people later in life was surreal,” Pfister explained. Pfister would go on to beat Smith.

CCCApply Steering Committee Meeting

On Wednesday, BC’s Michelle Pena and Craig Hayward presented at the CCCApply Steering Committee. Since 2000, the CCCApply Steering Committee has governed the design and evolution of the online application for admission to the California Community Colleges. In collaboration with the California Community Colleges Chancellor’s Office (CCCCO), the Committee and related workgroups represent stakeholders from large and small districts, rural and urban areas, Northern and Southern California, and different student information systems.

Veterans Roll Call

Berna

Bernadette Martinez (in red) at our Veterans Commencement Celebration 2017

Bernadette Martinez sent an email that she creatively called “Veterans Roll Call.”  With all the new faces at BC for the upcoming year, she shared that each year we celebrate VetFest. This year, it will be a  week long celebration filled with activities and Bernadette said, “With that we also like to honor our own Renegades that are Veterans, by setting up a flag garden set up and would like to know who you are so you can be recognized. We will also allow family and friends of Veterans to purchase a flag for our loved ones closer to the week of.”

It’s going to be a fantastic week at BC. Have I told you recently that I’m the luckiest and happiest college president ever?

Did you know?

On Thursday, The Bakersfield Californian ran a correction from Jerry Ludeke about the original 13 students who attended Bakersfield College in 1913. She is quoted in the piece, saying

“Several years ago the BC Archives was given the original ‘Record of Junior College Students of Kern County High School, Bakersfield, Cal. Transcript from office record cards. May 1915 by PV.’ PV is Paul VanderEike, vice-principal of the high school who was in charge of the junior college classes. In his own handwriting, he lists the 13 original students along with the classes they took: Norman Buhn, Nora Burke, Alma Carter, Josephine Chase, Myrtle Dennen, Leland Ellis, George Gowan, Clyde Gregory, Lois Price, Ida Sybrandt, Viola White, Jessie Wiley, and Helen Warthorst. Ten of them had indeed graduated from KCHS.”

The Eclipse by Nick Strobel

Nick Strobel’s article about the solar eclipse was published in the Bakersfield Californian today. Nick went to Montana on August 21st to see the eclipse from inside of the path of totality that spanned from Oregon to South Carolina where the moon completely blanketed the sun. Here is how Nick described the spectacle of getting to see such a rare astronomical event:

“Experiencing the dark shadow of the moon approach you at supersonic speeds, seeing the sky grow dark enough for the stars to come out within just a few seconds, looking at the sun with a huge black hole punched in the middle of it, and seeing the mysterious wispy glowing light of the corona around that black hole is an experience that strikes you at an instinctual, emotional and intellectual level all at once.”

For those who were unable to experience the eclipse from the area of totality, Nick recommends checking out the Eclipse Megamovie Project, which is collecting images all along the totality path in the hopes of demonstrating how the corona changed during the approximately 90 minutes of totality in the United States. The project also aims to take advantage of the “diamond ring effect” at different locations along the path of totality to more precisely measure the size of the sun. If the eclipse has sparked your interest in astronomy, you can buy tickets to the Dawn of the Space Age show on Thursday, September 21st at the William M. Thomas Planetarium or go to the Planetarium home page to see all of our upcoming shows.

First College Council Meeting:

Welcoming Students – It’s Fall 2017

Good morning Bakersfield.  It is August 26, 2017… a fabulous first week of classes.  And a great day to be a Renegade!

 bc-group-2-march-2016

Welcoming Students Back on Campus

With an over 6.5% increase in students, we knew the level of activity on campus this week would be intense… and it was intense, but it was wonderful! It’s always incredible to see the hallways filled and the campus full and alive with students excited to learn.

See our enrollment growth over the last four years

Enrollments

Steve Watkin Welcome Center Fall 2017The Office of Student Life had four welcome tents around Panorama campus for staff and faculty Renegades to greet arriving students and be available to help them with campus information and student planners. The tables were at the Administration Building, AREA building, swimming pool, and outdoor theater.  Student Life also had two golf carts roaming the campus offering rides and guidance to students as they walked around campus. Delano Campus also greeted students at a welcome tent at the DST Building.

Within the Student Life office, staff doubled up with student employees to help ensure that lines were minimal. Multiple activities were hosted around campus to ensure that students had something to do between classes. Student Life also created posters and banners to help provide directions. BCSGA hosted a table on the Renegade Crossroads where they were able to help students and talk about BC.

Food services increased their grab-and-go items, and I even saw Chef Sabella running the register to help move students through quickly. There was a constant flow through the Panorama Grill and Food Court.

The Counseling and Advising Center has provided a dedicated line for quick questions staffed by Counselors to ensure that students with holds or pre-requisite issues are seen in a timely manner. Dedicated workshops were being held throughout the day and assigned advisors were providing extended support to serve students till 6:30pm through the Welcome Center.  Outreach and School Relations extended their open hours to assist students with their schedule needs, answer any questions, and equip all new students with student ID cards.

Public Safety had patrol officers conducting high visibility patrols in the parking lots. They, too, assisted students with questions regarding parking permits and where their classes were located on campus. We set up a right-turn-only traffic direction out the main driveway to assist students and staff to exit the campus easily onto Haley Street. This right-turn-only exit has helped in deterring congestion.

41588b3.png

On Monday, BCSGA hosted a tie-dye event where students could design their own shirts. Then on Tuesday, they hosted an ice cream social while giving the scoop on student organizations, encouraging everyone to get involved! Wednesday’s activities featured a live band at lunch and BC bowling in the Fireside Room, and on Thursday, it was movie day featuring Guardian of the Galaxy Vol. 2, with popcorn!

Who is ready for week 2?!

Viewing the eclipse on campus

One of BC’s three new Physics faculty, Dr. Timothy Plett, took his Physical Sciences B12 class outside to see the solar eclipse. Students got to use filtering glasses that allowed them to see the moon in front of the sun in high detail without harming their eyes. In the spirit of college faculty from 100 years ago, Dr. Plett instructed his class today in full regalia. Here is Professor LeBlanc providing views of the eclipse to students.

Check out Nick Strobel’s Facebook site to view great images.  Here is one post from August 21st.

New Hydration Stations

hydration2

Itzel Buenrostro

The Office of Student Life is excited to announce the addition of two new filtered Hydration Stations at the Panorama Campus. The Hydration Stations promote water conservation and healthy hydration. You can now fill up your large cups or water bottles at these two stations with the push of a button! The new stations are located in the Campus Center in the quad, and in the Gym next to vending machines near the Athletics Offices.

These additions were funded through the collaborative efforts of Kern Health Systems, Kern Schools Federal Credit Union, and the Office of Student Life. In celebration of these new additions, Student Life and BCSGA is announcing September 5th-7th as Healthy Hydration Week. We challenge each of you to utilize the Hydration Stations to fill your water bottles and stay hydrated. As a special incentive to students, Renegade Pantry Recipients who sign up for the August 31st monthly distribution will receive a free water bottle with their distribution bag. Please encourage your students to sign up for food by visiting www.bakersfieldcollege.edu/studentassistance/food.

Thank you to Kern Health Systems and Kern Schools Federal Credit Union for their assistance in accomplishing this task! Be on the lookout for more healthy habits coming soon from the Office of Student Life.

Renegade Athletics

WrestlingState_ad_hocIt’s a great time to be at BC and it’s a great time for BC Athletics. Renegade Football begins in a few days and Renegade Wrestling is preparing for its first meet during the Bakersfield Duals September 9th starting at 9AM. You can check out the Wrestling Schedule for the rest of the semester on the athletics website, but two upcoming dates to mark on your calendar are Saturday, 9/9: Bakersfield Duals, 9AM and Thursday, 10/26: Victor Valley, 7PM.

Yesterday, BC Men’s Soccer hosted their home opener against Santa Monica College and The Bakersfield Californian highlighted the team in an article titled, “Renegades men’s soccer wants to take a second-year leap.” The article says, “BC also has several quality newcomers to its roster. Martinez believes one of the team’s biggest strengths is the play of midfielders Hernandez, Melendez, Luke Tovar (Stockdale High) and Danny Guerrero (East High, Taft College). ‘Everybody is very important, but our midfield group has been pushing the pace throughout our training, just making everybody better with their touch, their passing,’ Martinez said. ‘We’re very excited about the way they are playing.’”  VayronCoverArt_copy.jpgCross Country is also preparing for a brand new year. The Californian also highlighted both the women’s and men’s teams in an article titled, “Lots of changes for BC cross country teams.” The article spotlights some upcoming hopefuls and names to keep on your radar while also mentioning there are big shoes to fill. Specifically, it was shared that the women’s team qualified for CCCAA State Championship last year, but this year “… the BC men’s team has more runners and more experience at the junior college level than its female counterpart.”

Thank you Stephen Lynch at the Bakersfield Californian for the spotlights on BC athletics.

Maria Wright and Yvonne Armendariz

AmeriCorps members will serve as student ambassadors in work-based learning and career exploration for students at Bakersfield College. They will help students access services, improve employability, and prepare for success in college and career.

Thank you to the Foundation for California Community Colleges for your support of BC! Here are the two BC administrators who will be the Principal Investigators for the grant: Maria Wright and Yvonne Armendariz.

Jones Gallery

This year’s BC Art Faculty Exhibition at the Wylie and May Louise Jones Gallery inside the library promises to be exciting.

Every year, our art faculty puts together an exhibition of work showcasing all of the artistic techniques and media that they can provide to our students. There will of course be traditional painting, drawing and sculpture, but there will also be photography, video and digital media projects on hand for students to see the work that their talented art professors are capable of both working in and teaching.

The Art Faculty Exhibition runs September 14th through October 13th with a special artists’ reception from 4-7 p.m. on the opening day. The Jones Gallery’s hours of operation to check out the exhibit will be Mondays and Wednesdays from 2:30 to 4 p.m. and Tuesdays and Thursdays from 1-4 p.m.

Industrial & Transportation Technology (ITT) Completion Coaching Community

The Industrial & Transportation Technology (ITT) Pathway Completion Team started the fall semester off with a great orientation for students in this meta-major. It was the team’s first step in “clarifying the path,” the first pillar of our Guided Pathways Initiative. Approximately 50 students attended the event held on the Monday evening prior to the first week of classes.

Martin Perez, California Careers Pathway Trust Grant Program Manager, welcomed the participating students and introduced Antonio Alfaro, Career & Technical Education Advisor, who also spearheaded the Orientation planning. Antonio emphasized the need and importance of developing an educational plan. He provided a list of all the programs in the ITT Pathway and encouraged them to set up appointments with him for educational planning. Lupe Aguirre provided an overview of labor market trends within the Industrial Technology and Transportation Pathway, including career opportunities currently available. She directed them to career education services, such as job search preparation, internships, resume and cover letter critique, interview preparation and upon graduation, and referrals to employment in their field. Kim Arbolante, Writing Center Lead, introduced the students to the types of Academic Support services available and Pita Montes gave an overview of financial aid programs.

Five faculty from programs in the ITT Pathway talked about the courses in their disciplines, types of certificates and degrees available, and types of jobs students would qualify for upon completion of a program. Justin Flint represented the Auto Technology program; Manny Fernandez represented Electronics Technology; Catherine Jones described the new Occupational Safety and Risk Management program; Robert Stewart represented Manufacturing Technology; and Jason Dixon, Engineering and Industrial Technology Department Chair filled in the gaps by describing the remaining programs in the ITT Pathway. It was a great opportunity to showcase programs to students in the ITT Pathway and provide clarity about the path to success in these fields.

Valley Fever Walk at Kern County Museum

Emmanual at Fever WalkEmmanuel Limaco was featured in Mayor Karen Goh’s photographs from last Saturday’s Valley Fever Walk at the Kern County Museum. The walk is the culmination of all the charity efforts taking place during Valley Fever Awareness Month, which seeks to spread the word about treatment and prevention of one of the Central Valley’s most debilitating illnesses.

All the proceeds from the Valley Fever walk go to finding a cure and raising awareness of Valley Fever, a dangerous fungal disease endemic to parts of Southwestern North America in general but the San Joaquin Valley in particular. Kern County residents have a 1-3 percent chance of contracting the disease, according to a report by KBAK/KBFX Eyewitness News. Dr. Hans Einstein, a relative of famed physicist Albert Einstein, was the foremost authority on Valley Fever and conducted most of his research at Kern Medical Center in Bakersfield for almost 50 years. The Valley Fever walk, now in its sixth year, is held in his honor.

Harold Pierce of The Bakersfield Californian has been doing great coverage of Valley Fever.  Congressman Kevin McCarthy has set this issue on the national agenda.  Check it out http://tinyurl.com/yadesyxd

A nice note.

Last week, BC Professor, Gayle Richardson was kind enough to send me a message along with a LinkedIn article about the passion of great bosses. I often say that I’m the luckiest and happiest college president ever and it’s because of our incredible faculty, staff, and students. It’s always a treat to see what they’re up to.

Gayle was in Encinitas last week putting together a princess birthday for her granddaughter. Rapunzel came to life and told all of the girls at the party stories and sang songs with them. She ended the email by saying, “I am looking forward to working with the students in one more week and seeing everyone on campus this week.”

Agriculture professor Chris McCraw posted this fun video on Facebook.

This week I met Dr. Jim Grimes and while we were talking he told me about his daughter Sarah Grimes who graduated from BC this past May and is now is a transfer student at UC Santa Barbara.  I am always excited to hear stories about BC grads.  And as it turns out Sarah’s mom Tracie is an English faculty member at BC.  Renegades everywhere!

So what about Neo?

Poor baby…… Of course, I could hardly work with him recuperating from a recent procedure. Though I have to say he’s been remarkably tolerant and gracious through it all.

He is 54 lbs now.

That’s all for now.

Until next time.

With much Renegade Pride and Collegiality.

Another usual weekend enjoying the Bakersfield Community

Clayton Fowler and Sonya Oct 3 2015 Leadership Conf

SGA President Clayton and Sonya Christian. October 3, 2015

I stopped by Wendy’s last evening to pick up a spicy chicken sandwich for dinner and the young woman serving me spontaneously commented that she was a student at BC, psychology major, and that her teachers in all of her classes were the very best.  This encounter is not unusual for me or for any of you.  BC has stood for excellence and leadership for over a century and this community has steadfastly supported its college for all that time.

My Saturday morning started with welcoming over 100 students from BC and CSUB who were attending a Leadership conference at the indoor theater.  Bakersfield Strong: Our city, our organizations, our student leaders was the theme of the conference.  I was proud of our SGA President Clayton Fowler and Director of Student Life, Nicky Damania, who planned this event in collaboration with CSUB.

What a community we have – you just have to look.

After the morning event, I headed to the College of the Canyons stadium where the Renegades were meeting the Cougars. Standing near the end zone I was perfectly situated to see the crowd on both sides of the field. I was thinking about how many of our community members turned out for their team, and how much they care for and support the student athletes.

At halftime it was shaping up as a tough match in a tough season. As I spoke with the community members I heard their unwavering support and dedication.

In the second half one of our players, Terrence Young (23) went down with an injury on his right shoulder.  Dr. Bill Baker took to the field right behind our athletic trainers, Mike Medeiros and Fred Smith. Dr. Baker is a former BC football player himself, and it was at BC that he met his wife Sharon.  The two of them come to the Renegade games year-in and year-out to support the team, and Dr. Baker to volunteer his services.

Terrence was clearly in pain from his right shoulder injury, and after stabilizing him Dr. Baker signaled for the ambulance.  Sandi Taylor and the Athletic Dept. Assistant Alex followed the ambulance to the Henry Mayer hospital on McBean Parkway where Terrence was taken.

After the game I joined them, and in the waiting room once again saw our community join together in support of our student. Coach Chudy was there and spoke to Terrence’s grandmother.  Stig Janz, Ed Advisor for the athletes was there as well, and it seems attends pretty much every athletic event. Fred Smith stayed the night with Terrence at the hospital.  Just wonderful!

I had the opportunity to visit with Sharon Baker who attends each game with her husband. How fortunate we are at BC to have such commitment from folks like the Bakers.  And of course Dr. Tivnon.

As I sat with this community of support, talking quietly and there to support Terrence, I was aware that this community is family. This community, this family, comes together to celebrate when times are good and gathers together when times are hard. Thank you Bakersfield! Thank you Dr. Baker! Thank you Dr. Tivnon!

Remembering Tom Nery, a true Renegade

Nery-Christian-01

Sonya Christian with Tom Nery. Fall 2014

We lost a true dyed-in-the-wool Renegade earlier this month.

Thomas Nery, a BC grad and member of the storied 1961 Renegade football team that played in the historic Junior Rose Bowl against Cameron University, passed away a few weeks ago.

I first met Tom, 76, at last year’s Homecoming game and was immediately struck by his winning personality and deep sense of pride and enthusiasm for his alma mater. So it was with great sadness that I received this email earlier this week from Tom’s daughter Kim Nery Drndarski.

Hello Sonya,

I wanted to share the news of the passing of my father, Thomas Nery, a former BC Renegade from 1961.

Tom Nery

Tom Nery with daughter Kim

At last year’s homecoming, you interviewed him and me during the game. You really made him feel special that afternoon, the hero he is to his family.

We went to the GWC game last week, and I saw you there. I wanted to tell you my thanks in person and give you a giant hug, but I knew I was going to cry and I decided to send you cyber hugs instead.

My Dad passed on 9/1/15, after a short battle with pancreatic cancer. It takes the worst cancer to bring down a Renegade. He will be placed at Greenlawn on River Blvd., on 10/3/15 at 11am. He worked there when he was attending BC. I made sure that his niche faces the school and asked if he could hear the game from where he is on Saturday nights. :o)

Thank you again, from the bottom of my heart, for making him feel so special that day.

Blessings,

Kim Drndarski

Nery-02Kim also sent this photo of Tom in his vintage 1961 BC jersey along with his grandson.  50 years later and the jersey still fits…

During our time together at 2014 Homecoming, I shot this quick video talking with both Tom and Kim.

First, a thank you to Kim for taking the time to reach out and pass along the sad news. I’m returning that cyber hug and adding my thoughts and good wishes for you and your family as you go through this difficult time.

And also, a sincere thank you to Tom. You represented Bakersfield College with distinction 50 years ago on the gridiron, then spent a half-century further honoring this institution by leading a life that bettered your community while raising a beautiful, loving family.

As Tom himself said in the video, “I had a good life.” No one could ever ask for more.

I know I’ll be thinking of you when I head out to Memorial Stadium Sept. 26 for our next home game against Allan Hancock. And I’m heartened to know that your spirit will be there cheering on future Renegade squads for decades of Saturday nights to come.

Rest easy, Tom.

Renegade Athletics: Ending the Season on High Note

Francis Mayer Dec 15 2014

Francis Mayer coaching the Equity TV Team on Dec 15 2014

I was just browsing BC’s webpages and found the Athletics website to be very current and engaging.  Check it out at http://www.gogades.com/

Thank you Francis Mayer for keeping this website up-to-date.  Also thank you for your work on the Renegade Report which aired last season with 15 episodes on Thursdays at 11:00 a.m.  You can find the archived versions of the videos at: http://tinyurl.com/lnh5w9r

Francis is now producing BC’s first Equity TV show that will air live on Monday, January 19th, at 11:00 p.m. Our launch episode is with the African American Initiative. Odella Johnson is the lead for 4 episodes on Equity TV that focuses on African Americans and the importance of higher education.  The Latino strand is co-led by Corny Rodriguez and Lisa Kent, the Veterans by Tina Mendoza and Paul Beckworth, and the remaining by Prima Arvizu.  More on the BC Equity TV later.

For now, here is a quick blurb on Renegade Athletics from my report to the KCCD Board on December 18, 2014:

Renegades celebrate after winning the Western State Championship on Nov 22 2014

The Renegade Football team overcame a disappointing 1-4 start by winning their next final five regular season games and qualifying for the Western State Bowl. With only a week to prepare, the Athletic Department rallied together and obtained the financial backing of longtime supporter Clifford Bradford Insurance to underwrite the game. Where the Renegades lacked numbers and size, they compensated with creative play calling, gutsy execution, and attention to detail on special teams. Placekicker Parker Campbell is a great example of this. While Chaffey’s defense was stubborn and wouldn’t let the Renegades score a touchdown on offense, Campbell was a perfect long-distance weapon. He was five of five on field goal attempts, accounting for 15 of the ‘Gades 22 total points. He was awarded the Offensive Player of the Game Award, a rare honor for a kicker. Another rare occurrence was Punter Dayton Diorio earning Defensive MVP honors. He did so by pinning Chaffey inside of their own 20 yard line four times with booming punts. The overall MVP of the game is the grandson of former Head Football Coach and Athletic Director Carl Bowser, Renegade legacy Dominic Frasch. “Dom” is a speedy defensive back who scored the game’s only touchdown, a trick punt play where Frasch took the snap instead of the punter, and sped 59 yards for the score.

Wrestling

Jack Murphy

Jack Murphy

Renegade Wrestling battled injuries and weight issues most of the season, but there was one constant rock; 197 pounder Jack Murphy. According to Head Coach Brett Clark, Murphy put together one of the dominant seasons in program history by going undefeated (23-0) and not being taken down once. Murphy also didn’t give up a single offensive point all season. He capped off the effort with a 3-2 victory in the state championship match against Oscar Martinez of Cerritos College. It was Renegade Wrestling’s first state championship since current Assistant Coach Joe Espejo won the Heavyweight title ten years ago in 2004. Murphy has appointments with five different schools to discuss his transfer options. He wants to get a degree in sports medicine.

Women’s Basketball

women's basketball

Coach Paula Dahl says relationships are everything, and her team is proving it this season with an incredible 9-0 start. Coach Dahl says it’s been almost a different star in every win this season, including big performances from Claesy Tarver, Rosebrooke Hunt, Alex Green, Nakia Page, and McKaiela Tyler. She says the teammates don’t even send individual texts to one another anymore; instead every message is a group text. Their second tournament championship in program history was achieved when they won the Bristol Marketplace Classic at Santa Ana, and Tarver won tourney MVP honors. Dahl says the last time a team had this hot of a start, they finished second in the conference championships. Her goal this season is simple: she wants to win the conference and host playoff games in March. Check out the December 18, 2015 piece in the Californian at
