At the American Society for Engineering Education Zone IV Awards Ceremony aboard the Queen Mary on Friday, April 25th, Liz Rozell received the Outstanding Community College Educator Award from the Pacific Southwest Section. This award is presented for excellence in the instruction of engineering with the purpose to serve as an incentive to advance engineering education. She was accompanied by her daughter, Carly Rozell, also one of her former engineering students who now works as an engineer locally.

Recipients of this award must demonstrate excellence in teaching and the ability to inspire students to high levels of scholastic achievement, character growth and leadership potential; demonstrate outstanding subject matter competence and the ability to develop courses and curricula to serve the wide range of abilities found in community college students; show evidence of success in creatively providing students with career planning, program design and transfer guidance towards successful completion of their first career preparation; show evidence of outstanding achievement in innovative laboratory techniques, equipment, or utilization and the integration of laboratory exercises with lecture presentations; and show evidence of leadership and/or distinguished service to the college, the local community or other arenas that demonstrate a strong connection between engineering, education and society.

Liz was nominated for this award by Amelito Enriquez, engineering faculty at Canada College and letters of support were provided by former students and colleagues. Some of the comments from these letters include: “I can say without any hesitation that the quality of teaching from Professor Rozell was far beyond what I received at the university…She made a huge impact on my life and educational career.” “It was not until I had a class with Mrs. Rozell that I found a sense of belonging in the field I was pursuing. She came in with a warm smile on her face, an enthusiasm to teach, and vast knowledge of the subject. I remember finally making a connection to the engineer I wanted to be. I know she inspired many women to continue in engineering.”

Congratulations, Liz!
